Flood Damage Cleanup in Hillsborough Basement Uncovers Larger Issue

Due to recent storms and substantial rainfall in this area of the county, water damage from flash floods has affected homes. Because of the potential for contaminants in groundwater, it is the most severe level of water damage that can occur in a home and should be professionally cleaned up to avoid secondary issues.

When our SERVPRO Technicians arrived on site for a Hillsborough home flood damage cleanup at the what we found was not from groundwater rushing in from outside from the rains it was seeping up into the basement. This event happens when the ground gets overloaded with water and relieves the hydrostatic pressure by pushing water towards the path of least resistance, which in this case was the basement.

There was nowhere for the water to go, so there was some standing water in the basement. Our technicians sprayed disinfectant on the water and used submersible pumps to extract the water quickly. The cinderblock walls retained some water, so we drilled holes near the bottom of the mortar joint to let water drain and let air flow into the wall cavity.

In the past, the homeowner felt the basement had a humidity issue, and stored items in plastic bins, which saved many possessions from water damage. Up until now, the reason was unknown for the exact cause of the ongoing damp conditions. The property owner saw random puddles of water in the floor but thought it was the boiler expelling water.
During the drying process, we angled the air movers to blow directly over the concrete floor. A separate setup of air movers directed air flow into the holes that we drilled in the mortar joists to send warm, dry air into the wall cavity. Once dry, we cleaned and disinfected the walls and floors.

Our SERVPRO location possesses a general contractor license, and once we completed mitigation on the basement, we gave the homeowner the repairs needed on the foundation to avoid this scenario in the future.
